Looking for a Christmas gift that's unmistakably Australian, easy to pack and special enough to be treasured long after Christmas morning? Meet Rugaroo.
Rugaroo dolls are Australian-designed heirloom plush dolls of our native animals: kangaroos, koalas, wombats, echidnas, platypuses and black swans, each with its own personality, outfit and story. They stand 13cm or 15cm tall, weigh around 20g, start from under $50 and fit easily into a Christmas stocking, a carry-on bag or a parcel to the grandkids. We post Rugaroo within Australia and to New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and 1% of every Rugaroo sale is donated to WIRES to help rescue Australian wildlife.
There's something about an Australian Christmas you just can't replicate anywhere else. The smell of sunscreen, the sound of cicadas, backyard cricket, sandy feet, mangoes dripping down little arms and someone inevitably asking whether the prawns are ready.
For those of us who grew up here, these are the little things that make Christmas feel like Christmas. And for Australians raising children overseas, they're often the things we miss the most.
That's what makes finding the right Australian Christmas gift for kids so special. It's not about the biggest present under the tree. Sometimes it's about giving a child a little piece of home.
Meet Rugaroo: Australian Animal Dolls With a Whole Lot of Personality
If you're searching for unique Australian Christmas gifts for children, Rugaroo is a little different from the usual koala keyring at the airport.
Our characters take the wildlife we know and love and give them occupations, friendships and little lives of their own. There's Dazza the Tradie, who's never far from his toolbox with six tiny tools. Shaz the Sunbaker, who knows how to make the most of a sunny afternoon. Joey the Postie, who arrives in his very own little red post box.
Then there are Clancy and Maisie, our Kindy/Prep wombats, complete with school uniforms and tiny backpacks. Marg the Barista runs the café. Wazza the Cockie is a farmer, not a bird, and he'd like that cleared up. Col and Riva host the campground. Byron the Sunbaking Black Swan is exactly as laid-back as his name suggests, and Baz the BBQ Backseat Cook has opinions about how you're cooking those snags.
Every Rugaroo is a limited edition, and our newest characters carry a signature ochre right foot, a nod to the red earth our little mates call home.
They're unmistakably Australian, right down to the tiniest details. And while they might fit in your hand, the stories children create with them can be enormous.
The Story Behind Rugaroo
Rugaroo began with a little wallaby named Ginger.
Years ago, while living in the Northern Territory, Dana held a wildlife permit and cared for Ginger, an orphaned wallaby whose mum had been hit by a car. For eight months, Ginger came almost everywhere with her, tucked into a pouch, until he was ready to hop back into the wild.
That little wallaby became part of the inspiration behind Rugaroo, a small world of Australian animals for children to love, carry with them and build stories around. Even our Pouch Bag was inspired by those months carrying Ginger.
It feels only right that the little animals he inspired can help the real ones too, which is why 1% of Rugaroo sales is donated to WIRES to support Australian wildlife rescue and care. Read our story.
The Perfect Australian Christmas Gift for Kids Living Overseas
If you're an Australian living in the UK, New Zealand, the USA, Canada or anywhere else in the world, you'll probably know this feeling.
You want your children to know where they come from. You want them to recognise a kookaburra, know what a wombat is, laugh at the word dunny and understand why Australians get so misty-eyed about a backyard hoist.
Rugaroo dolls make beautiful Australian gifts for kids overseas because they bring a little bit of Australian childhood into everyday play.

They're a way for grandparents in Australia to send something meaningful to grandchildren abroad, a thoughtful present for an expat family, or a special gift for a child who has never visited Australia but has heard all the stories.
We hear these stories from customers all the time. FIFO families choose Dazza the Tradie so the kids have something that reminds them of dad while he's away. Little nippers are given Sandy the Surf Rescuer after their first surf lifesaving season. And for family overseas, the black swan is a favourite: native to Australia, borrowed by the rest of the world, but always ours.
The loveliest part? They're not made to sit on a shelf. They're made to be played with, taken on adventures and woven into the stories children tell every day. Sometimes a little kangaroo is more than a toy. It's a connection to somewhere, and someone, very special.
Small, Lightweight and Easy to Pack
Anyone who's packed a suitcase full of Christmas presents knows the struggle. Between clothes, shoes and gifts for the whole family, suitcase space disappears very quickly. And don't get us started on luggage weight limits.
Rugaroo dolls come in two sizes. Our littlies size dolls are 13cm tall, including the kangaroos, the koalas and Clancy and Maisie, our Kindy wombats. Our oldies size dolls are 15cm, including the platypuses, the black swans, Marg, Wazza and our echidnas. Each doll weighs around [ADD WEIGHT]g.
They tuck easily into a suitcase, a carry-on or a Christmas stocking. No enormous toy boxes taking up half your luggage. Just a little Aussie mate, ready to come along for the adventure.

Add a Pouch Bag for a Gift-Ready Present
Sometimes the wrapping is half the fun.
The Rugaroo Pouch Bag is a canvas kids bum bag, inspired by a mother kangaroo's pouch, that becomes part of the gift itself. Pop a little Australian animal doll inside and it's ready to give, no wrapping paper required. It comes in Natural, Sage Floral and Pink Floral for $29.99. Pouch Bags are half price when you buy one with a doll.
It's particularly handy when you're travelling, keeping your little mates together in a suitcase, handbag or backpack. After Christmas, children can clip it to a school bag and carry their favourite Rugaroo on holidays, sleepovers and everyday adventures. (Joey already has his own post box, so he travels in style.)
More Than a Soft Toy: A Little World of Australian Imaginative Play
One of the things we love most is watching what happens when children bring their characters together. A kangaroo becomes the local postie. A wombat opens a café. An echidna heads off on a camping adventure, and a black swan decides it's time for a ballet performance. Suddenly a whole little Australian world comes to life.
Our dolls are designed for open-ended play. There's no right or wrong way to do it. Start with one favourite animal, add a second to create a friendship, or gradually build a whole community.
For an extra-special gift, the Rugaroo Miniature Playground adds swings, slides, carousels and hammocks, and our metal accessories include the Backyard Hoist in Eucalyptus and Galvanised. Most of our characters have hidden magnetic hands so they can hold on to the carousel. Col and Riva can't use the swing, mind you. They know why.
And because no Aussie get-together is complete without an esky, there's the T'roo-Blue Esky with Lamingtons and the Lilac Esky with Fairy Bread.
A backyard hoist might not mean much to someone who's never seen one, but to an Aussie? It's practically a national treasure.
A Nostalgic Christmas Gift for Parents and Grandparents, Too
Here's something we've noticed. Sometimes the grown-ups get just as excited as the kids.
A tiny toolbox reminds someone of their dad. A little sunbaker brings back summer holidays at the beach. A miniature backyard hoist takes someone straight back to their grandparents' house. And suddenly, they're telling stories about growing up in Australia, the places they visited and the people they loved.
If you'd like to keep the stories going, our children's books are written about the characters themselves. Dusty and the Mango Tree and The Tradie Kangaroo and His Broken Friend are $14.95 each and slip into a suitcase as easily as the dolls do.
It's a gift for the child, with a little nostalgia tucked inside for the grown-up.
Australian Christmas Gift Ideas for Every Age, Interest and Budget
For the Little Animal Lover
Start with one of Australia's most recognisable animals. Bindi and Dusty the koalas, Sheila the True-Blue Kangaroo or a wombat are a lovely introduction to Australian wildlife, especially for children overseas who won't see these animals every day.
For the Child Who Loves Making Up Stories
Choose two or three characters who can go on adventures together. A tradie, a postie and a barista? A koala family? In Australia, a group of kangaroos is called a mob, so we call this building your mob, and you'll save 15% when you choose three or more Rugaroo pieces.
For the Child Who Loves Miniature Worlds
Pair a few dolls with pieces from the Miniature Playground or an esky full of lamingtons. Small-world play at its most Australian.
For the Grandchild Living Overseas
Choose an animal that reminds you of home, pop it in a Pouch Bag and add a handwritten note about why you picked that character. Perhaps it's an animal you've spotted together, or one you can't wait to show them when they next visit. That little story makes the gift.
For Babies and Toddlers
Our miniature dolls are for ages 3 and up, so for the littlest ones we made My First Mate Jack and My First Mate Jill, large 50cm cotton kangaroo dolls that are safe from birth.
Stocking Fillers Under $30
A Rugaroo children's book ($14.95) or a Pouch Bag ($29.99) makes a lovely stocking filler, and both pair perfectly with a doll later on.
Please note: Our miniature Rugaroo dolls and metal playground accessories are designed for children aged 3 years and over because they contain small parts and magnets. Age guidance is listed on every product page.
Why Choose an Australian-Designed Christmas Gift?
There are plenty of toys in the world, but finding something that feels genuinely Australian can be surprisingly hard.
We didn't invent dolls. We just wanted to make them unmistakably Australian.
Rugaroo celebrates our animals, our humour, our everyday characters and all the little details that make Australia feel like home. Our characters are designed in Australia, with cotton and linen outer fabrics, independent safety testing and registered designs. And every sale helps WIRES look after the real-life versions.
