Most play mats are made from EVA foam. EVA requires formamide, a known reproductive toxin, to be soft. Rugabub play mats are made from medical-grade TPU foam. No formamide. No PVC. No phthalates. No compromise. Just a beautifully designed, independently tested play mat that is genuinely safe from day one. And yes, it passes the sniff test too.

The Ocean Road is a minimalist landscape designed to spark open-ended imagination and creative play, the perfect surface for toy cars, animals and Rugaroo characters and miniature accessories. As children grow, the Ocean Road side becomes the foundation for small-world play, one of the most powerful forms of early childhood development.
The Ocean Road was designed with Dana's three-year-old son, who chose the colours from the Pantone book and shaped the layout. The brief was simple: keep it minimal, leave space for imagination, let the child finish the picture.
Please note: Rugabub play mats eliminate harsh preserving chemicals including PVC, which may result in slight yellowing over time, more pronounced around the outer edges. This is more noticeable on lighter coloured designs like the Luna. A small trade-off we make deliberately, because the alternative is putting those chemicals on the floor your baby crawls on.

The material that doesn’t lie.
TPU, thermoplastic polyurethane, is the same material used in medical devices. It does not require carcinogens to be soft. It does not off-gas. It does not have a chemical smell when it arrives.
Every Rugabub play mat is independently tested to exceed toy safety regulations. When parents ask us what our mats are made from, we tell them exactly, because we have nothing to hide.
Why not EVA foam?
EVA foam uses formamide to create softness, a reproductive toxin banned in play mats across France and Belgium since 2010. We never used it. Rugabub mats are formamide-free, phthalate-free, and BPA-free. That is not a marketing claim. It is the result of choosing a harder-to-manufacture, more expensive material from the beginning.
