Large Non-Toxic TPU Foam Baby Play Mats, designed for the floor your family actually lives on.
Rugabub large play mats are made from medical-grade TPU foam, the only foam that does not require formamide, a known reproductive toxin, to be soft. No EVA. No PVC. No compromise. Just a beautifully designed, independently tested play mat that is genuinely safe from day one.
Each mat is reversible, a considered, rug-inspired designer pattern on one side and an imaginative play map on the other. Big enough for tummy time, crawling and the kind of floor play that takes over the whole room. Designed to complement modern Australian homes rather than fight with them. Available in large rectangular, round and Japandi designs.
Rugabub pioneered the designer play mat category in Australia. The first foam play mat in the world to win the Good Design Award. The only TPU play mat company in the world to win Clean + Conscious Gold and Editor's Choice simultaneously. Trusted by families worldwide.
Why Rugabub large play mats are different.
Most play mats are made from EVA foam, a material that requires formamide to be soft. Formamide is a reproductive toxin banned in play mats across France and Belgium since 2010. Rugabub play mats have never used it. Our mats are made from medical-grade TPU foam, the same material used in medical devices, formamide-free, phthalate-free and independently tested to exceed toy safety regulations. Read our full safety story.
The difference is not just safety. TPU foam does not off-gas, does not have a chemical smell when it arrives, and does not require carcinogens to be soft. When parents ask us what our mats are made from, we tell them exactly, because we have nothing to hide.
The reversible design parents love.
Every Rugabub large play mat is double-sided. The designer side features carefully considered patterns inspired by woven rugs, vintage textiles and natural materials, beautiful enough to leave on your living room floor without apology. Flip it over and a complete play world appears, roads, waterways and landscapes designed for small-world play with Rugaroo characters and miniature toys.
Two completely different looks. One mat. No compromise on quality on either side. Also available as round play mats and in our Japandi collection.
Built for every stage of childhood.
From newborn tummy time to crawling, toddler play and imaginative small-world adventures, the Rugabub large play mat grows with your child. At 2m×1.4m, there is genuine room to move. The 15mm memory foam core cushions bumps and tumbles. The wipe-clean TPU surface handles milk, puree and mud in equal measure, no scrubbing, no spray, no washing machine required.
No interlocking seams. No hidden gaps for bacteria. One seamless piece, wipe it down and it is done. See our Play Mat Care Guide for full cleaning instructions, and our 6-month warranty for peace of mind.
The original. Still the only.
Rugabub was the first play mat company in Australia to design foam play mats that look like rugs. In 2022, we became the first foam play mat in the world to win the Good Design Award, Australia's most rigorous independent design recognition. That same year, we were awarded Clean + Conscious Gold and Clean + Conscious Editor's Choice simultaneously, the only TPU foam play mat company in the world to hold both.
The category we created now has many faces. Our answer is the same as it has always been: make the best one. Read our story.
Questions parents ask about large baby play mats.
Are Rugabub play mats safe for babies?
Yes. Rugabub play mats are made from medical-grade TPU foam, formamide-free, phthalate-free, BPA-free and independently tested to exceed toy safety regulations. Safe from birth. See our full safety information.
What age are foam play mats suitable for?
From newborn. The 15mm padded foam core supports tummy time from day one and provides a safe, cushioned surface through crawling, cruising and toddler play.
Are padded play mats good for tummy time?
Yes, and the surface matters. TPU foam provides the right combination of softness and firmness for tummy time. Soft enough to be comfortable, firm enough to build the neck and core strength babies need. See our guide on before first use for setup tips.
What size play mat is best for babies and toddlers?
Rugabub large play mats measure 2m×1.4m, large enough for a newborn to roll freely and a toddler to set up a full small-world play space. Prefer a circular shape? See our round play mats.
Are Rugabub play mats waterproof and easy to clean?
Yes. The one-piece TPU surface is fully waterproof with no interlocking seams or hidden gaps. Wipe clean with a damp cloth, no scrubbing, no spray, no washing machine required. See our Play Mat Care Guide for full instructions.
What is the difference between TPU and EVA foam play mats?
EVA foam requires formamide, a reproductive toxin, to be soft. TPU foam does not. TPU is the same material used in medical devices, formamide-free, phthalate-free, does not off-gas and does not have a chemical smell. Rugabub has used TPU from the beginning, never EVA. Read the full material story.
