Round Non-Toxic TPU Foam Baby Play Mats, the next chapter after your newborn mat.
Rugabub round play mats are made from medical-grade TPU foam — the only foam that does not require formamide, a known reproductive toxin, to be soft. No EVA. No PVC. No compromise. A beautifully designed, independently tested play mat genuinely safe from day one.
We always recommend starting with a large play mat for newborns — the 2m x 1.4m surface gives plenty of room for tummy time and early rolling. The round mat comes into its own as babies grow. At 1.4m diameter it creates a defined, beautiful play space for a baby learning to sit, crawl and pull themselves up. When they topple backwards learning to balance, the padded circle catches them.
Each mat is reversible — a considered, rug-inspired designer pattern on one side and an imaginative play map on the other. Sits like a statement rug in any room. Also available as large rectangular mats and in the Japandi collection.
Rugabub pioneered the designer play mat category in Australia. The first foam play mat in the world to win the Good Design Award. The only TPU play mat company in the world to win Clean + Conscious Gold and Editor’s Choice simultaneously. Trusted by families worldwide.
Why round, and when.
The round play mat is not a replacement for the Rugabub large play mat — it is the next chapter. We always recommend starting with the large rectangular mat for newborns, where the generous 2m x 1.4m surface gives plenty of room for tummy time, rolling and all the unpredictable movement of early infancy.
As babies grow, the round mat comes into its own. At 1.4m diameter, it creates a defined, beautifully contained play space — the ideal size for a baby learning to sit, crawl and pull themselves up. When they topple backwards learning to sit unsupported, the padded circle catches them. When they cruise around the edge pulling up on furniture, the soft foam is right there. The round shape says: this is your space.
It also works beautifully in living rooms and nurseries where a rectangular mat feels too large — the circle sits like a statement rug and defines the play area without taking over the room. Read our full safety story.
The reversible design parents love.
Every Rugabub round play mat is double-sided. The designer side features carefully considered patterns inspired by woven rugs, coastal stripes and natural textures — beautiful enough to leave on your living room floor without apology. Flip it over and a complete play world appears, roads, waterways and landscapes designed for small-world play with Rugaroo characters and miniature toys.
Two completely different looks. One mat. No compromise on quality on either side. Also available as large rectangular play mats and in our Japandi collection.
Why Rugabub round play mats are different.
Most play mats are made from EVA foam, a material that requires formamide to be soft. Formamide is a reproductive toxin banned in play mats across France and Belgium since 2010. Rugabub play mats have never used it. Our mats are made from medical-grade TPU foam, the same material used in medical devices, formamide-free, phthalate-free and independently tested to exceed toy safety regulations. Read our full safety story.
TPU foam does not off-gas, does not have a chemical smell when it arrives, and does not require carcinogens to be soft. The one-piece wipe-clean surface has no interlocking seams or hidden gaps.
The original. Still the only.
Rugabub was the first play mat company in Australia to design foam play mats that look like rugs. In 2022, we became the first foam play mat in the world to win the Good Design Award, Australia’s most rigorous independent design recognition. That same year, we were awarded Clean + Conscious Gold and Clean + Conscious Editor’s Choice simultaneously, the only TPU foam play mat company in the world to hold both.
The category we created now has many faces. Our answer is the same as it has always been: make the best one. Read our story.
Questions parents ask about round baby play mats.
What age are round play mats suitable for?
Round play mats are ideal from around 4 months when babies start sitting with support, through crawling, cruising and toddler play. For newborns we always recommend starting with the large rectangular play mat for maximum tummy time space.
How big are Rugabub round play mats?
Rugabub round play mats are 1.4m in diameter and 15mm thick — large enough for a baby to sit and roll freely, with a defined circular play space that looks beautiful in any room.
Are round play mats good for babies learning to sit?
Yes — this is one of the best uses for a round mat. The 15mm foam core provides a soft landing when babies topple backwards learning to sit unsupported, and the circular shape creates a natural contained space that encourages independent play.
Are Rugabub round play mats safe for babies?
Yes. Made from medical-grade TPU foam, formamide-free, phthalate-free, BPA-free and independently tested to exceed toy safety regulations. Safe from birth. See our full safety information.
What is the difference between a round and large play mat?
The large mat (2m x 1.4m) gives maximum space for newborn tummy time and early movement. The round mat (1.4m diameter) creates a defined, beautiful play space better suited to sitting, crawling and toddler play. Many families have both — one for the nursery, one for the living room.
What is the difference between TPU and EVA foam play mats?
EVA foam requires formamide, a reproductive toxin, to be soft. TPU does not. It is the same material used in medical devices, formamide-free, phthalate-free, does not off-gas and does not have a chemical smell. Rugabub has used TPU from the beginning, never EVA. Read the full material story.
