A round play mat that looks like a designer rug, and works like one too.
The Jordan side is a coastal stripe with an elegant update: neutral tones with black nautical lines that move across the surface with quiet confidence. Not a traditional stripe, not quite a classic either. A timeless pattern given a chic coastal edit that works as effortlessly in a nursery as it does in a living room. The kind of print that sits beautifully against white walls, timber floors and everything natural.
Flip it over and The Little Explorer appears. A neutral, minimalist landscape designed for open-ended imaginative play; roads and open spaces that children fill in themselves. Toy cars, animals, Rugaroo characters, whatever they choose to bring to it. The map provides the world. The child decides what happens in it. As children grow, the Little Explorer side becomes the foundation for small-world play, one of the most powerful forms of early childhood development. Roads to drive along, open land to build on, spaces to imagine into.
The round format, 1.4m diameter, 15mm TPU foam, creates a defined, beautiful play space for a baby learning to sit and a toddler building worlds. Part of the Japandi Play Mat collection.
Why round — and when.
The round play mat is not a replacement for the Rugabub large play mat — it is the next chapter. We always recommend starting with the large rectangular mat for newborns, where the generous 2m x 1.4m surface gives plenty of room for tummy time, rolling and all the unpredictable movement of early infancy.
As babies grow, the round mat comes into its own. At 1.4m diameter, it creates a defined, beautifully contained play space — the ideal size for a baby learning to sit, crawl and pull themselves up. When they topple backwards learning to sit unsupported, the padded circle catches them. When they cruise around the edge pulling up on furniture, the soft foam is right there. The round shape says: this is your space.
“The softness matters most precisely when babies are learning to trust their own balance. A 15mm foam core at 1.4m diameter is exactly the right landing zone.”
It also works beautifully in living rooms and nurseries where a rectangular mat feels too large — the circle sits like a statement rug and defines the play area without taking over the room.

Medical-grade TPU foam. Not EVA. Never EVA.
Every Rugabub round play mat is made from medical-grade TPU foam — thermoplastic polyurethane, the same material used in medical devices. It is the only foam that does not require formamide to be soft. Formamide is a reproductive toxin. France and Belgium banned it in play mats in 2010. Rugabub has never used it.
TPU does not off-gas. It does not have a chemical smell when it arrives. It is waterproof, wipe-clean and independently tested to exceed toy safety standards. The one-piece surface means no seams, no hidden gaps, no interlocking edges where bacteria can hide. Read our full safety story.
The EVA foam problem
Most foam play mats are made from EVA — ethylene vinyl acetate — which requires formamide as a softening agent. Formamide is classified as a reproductive toxin. Rugabub has used TPU exclusively from the beginning. No exceptions.

Rugabub play mats have consistently clinched numerous awards due to their exceptional blend of innovation, safety, and design.
The original. Still the only.
Australia’s first foam play mat to win the Good Design Award.
Rugabub pioneered the designer play mat category in Australia — the rug-style aesthetic, the reversible design, the considered patterns that look like they belong on your living room floor. In 2022, we became the first foam play mat in the world to win the Good Design Award. That same year, we won Clean + Conscious Gold and Clean + Conscious Editor’s Choice simultaneously. No other TPU play mat company in the world holds both.
The category we created now has many faces. Our answer is the same as it has always been: make the best one.
The material that doesn’t lie.
TPU, thermoplastic polyurethane, is the same material used in medical devices. It does not require carcinogens to be soft. It does not off-gas. It does not have a chemical smell when it arrives.
Every Rugabub play mat is independently tested to exceed toy safety regulations. When parents ask us what our mats are made from, we tell them exactly, because we have nothing to hide.
Why not EVA foam?
EVA foam uses formamide to create softness, a reproductive toxin banned in play mats across France and Belgium since 2010. We never used it. Rugabub mats are formamide-free, phthalate-free, and BPA-free. That is not a marketing claim. It is the result of choosing a harder-to-manufacture, more expensive material from the beginning.
